Aung San Suu Kyi's party calls on Myanmar voters to reject military-backed constitution

YANGON, Myanmar - Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition party is calling for voters to cast their ballots against the military-backed draft constitution in an upcoming referendum.

The National League for Democracy says people should go to the polls "without fail" to mark the 'no' choice in a vote scheduled for next month. The league issued its position in a statement Wednesday.

The party said the proposed constitution, which is supposed to lead to a 2010 general election, is undemocratic. Critics of the draft charter say it is aimed at perpetuating military rule.
