Justice for Human Rights in Burma
For immediate release: December 10, 2007
In commemoration of the 59th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR) as adopted by the UN General Assembly, Justice for Human Rights in Burma (JHB) reaffirms its commitment to the human rights norms as declared in the UNDHR, and pursues accountability of injustices by the Burmese military junta, such as the May 30, 2003 massacre, and the brutal crackdown this year in September against thousands of monks, the 88 Generation Students and citizens for their peaceful protests. The world was in shock naming this the “Saffron Revolution” as Buddhist monks led the protests against economic hardships suffered by the people.
Therefore, JHB reiterates the following objectives on this anniversary of the global Human Rights Day:
· To bring international pressure – judicial, political and economic – on the military junta for the widespread human rights abuses.
· To gain the release of all political prisoners, as well as the resumption of political parties without restrictions and the establishment of the freedom of the press.
· To bring heightened attention to the gravity of the pervasive human rights abuses committed daily against the citizens of Burma.
· To hold the regime accountable for the atrocities committed against Buddhist monks.
JHB is encouraged to witness the establishment of the Human Defenders and Promoters Network (HDPN) in Burma since 2003, and congratulate them for holding their first Human Rights Day function in 2006. JHB is honored that the revered monks have bravely formed the overseas Sangha Council to address the military regime’s murders of monks.
JHB pledges continuous support to these human rights organizations in Burma and their activities with regard to human rights and humanitarian efforts. JHB is prepared to assist the Sangha Council in every way as they proceed with their investigation.
