BANGKOK, Nov. 8 — A United Nations mission to broker negotiations between Myanmar’s military government and prodemocracy leaders ended with little progress today after the United Nations special envoy left the country without meeting the junta’s longtime leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe.
Further, Mr. Gambari’s suggestion that he directly broker talks between the pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and representatives of the junta was rejected, according to Myanmar’s state-run media.
The envoy, Ibrahim Gambari, met for an hour with Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, whom the junta has kept under house arrest for 12 of the last 18 years, beginning after her party won overwhelmingly in general elections in 1990. Mr. Gambari left carrying a message from her, which will be made public later, said Charles Petrie, the top United Nations official in Myanmar.
